The First 30 Seconds After a Man Overboard

A man overboard emergency develops in seconds. In rough seas, a person in the water can disappear behind every wave, making them extremely difficult to locate again. This is why the spotter plays the most important role: they must keep pointing at the victim and never take their eyes off them, even for a moment.

The first actions are simple but must be carried out immediately:

Assign a spotter whose only job is to keep the victim in sight.

Shout "Man Overboard!" to alert everyone on board.

Throw flotation equipment towards the victim without delay.

Press the MOB button on your GPS to record the exact position

Slow the boat and prepare the recovery manoeuvre.
